Succession planning. There’s a saying that farmers never retire; they just tire. Perhaps that’s the case for many farmers and ranchers working late into their lives on their operations, which they’ve built up over the years. And so, retiring or handing over the operation to the next generation is the last thing they want to think about.

“More often than not, planning is deferred until some critical point,” says Allan Vyhnalek, University of Nebraska Extension educator and farm transition specialist.

“If there’s a sudden death, then your back is against the wall, and you could make bad decisions because of stress. It’s important to make sure we think about this while everything is going well, instead of during a crisis,” he explains.

Vyhnalek will be offering advice on ranch succession and transition planning during daily sessions, helping you dig into topics related to passing down the farm.

Nebraska Farmer Hour. Nebraska Farmer Editor Curt Arens will be joined by the Farm Progress New Products Team on Sept. 13 to share a few of their favorite equipment and technology finds from this year’s show. FFA members will join Arens on stage Sept. 14, as part of the Nebraska Farmer Hour.
