A new home on a new range

Preparing for the annual Maxwell Wildlife Refuge Buffalo Auction takes teamwork and skill.

The Maxwell Wildlife Refuge in Canton, Kan., is home of one of two bison herds managed by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism. Every fall, the herd is sorted, and culled animals are sold at a public auction hosted at the refuge.

This year’s auction on Nov. 2 drew crowds from as far away as New York, and as close as McPherson County, Kan. Many were on hand to just get an up-close experience with the majestic animals. Others were there to fill their freezers with meat for the coming year.

It takes a crew of staff and volunteers to help Maxwell’s manager Cliff Peterson gather the herd and conduct the auction. Watch a few highlights from the week’s work. (Video by Jennifer M. Latzke)
